KEEPING KENYAN GIRLS IN SCHOOL….AND WIN A FREE PHOTO SHOOT!!

Today I am excited to have a dear friend of mine, Nicola, from Nicola Herring Photography do a guest blog post about her time in Africa. Nicola has an amazing BIG heart and is coordinating a project funding a project helping woman in Africa. Myself, along with several other photographer are collaborating with Nicola and offering some awesome prizes AND TWO FREE PHOTO SHOOTS.

Meet Nicola…

A

As mothers day quickly approaches, our hearts and minds turn to fond thoughts of our moms and mothering women we know, especially when they have impacted our lives in a special and significant way. Motherhood is such a beautiful thing isn’t it!? And so, we have dedicated a day to celebrate all the women in our country who have devoted their lives to raising, loving and encouraging us. We pamper her and buy her gifts, take her out to dinner or send her to the spa so she knows how much we love and appreciate her. And every mother truly does deserves those things, especially my mum!

But have you ever thought about all the other mothers of the world? Have you ever wondered what its like to be a mom in a third world country? To most of us, it wouldn’t be quite as glamorous. Often these women don’t even have their basic needs met. She will go without so she can feed her children or sacrifice everything she has going for herself to make sure her children have the best opportunity instead. In extreme cases a mother may abandon or give up her child for adoption because she is so poor she literally cannot take care of them. And because disease and HIV are so prevalent, young girls may find themselves taking on the motherly role due to a parent’s death. Can you even imagine these scenarios? So, so sad…

I was recently in Africa photographing for a new project called “Sister Acts”, a project geared towards partnering with women in third world countries to help them with basic needs so they do not find themselves in the above situations. I got to witness firsthand this disturbing poverty and I knew I wasn’t going to come home without being changed. The faces of the women and girls in those poor villages has forever been engrained on my heart.

This year as mothers day is on its way, I cannot sit still while we celebrate and glamorize “Mootherhood in America”  even though I know that every mother truely deserves the recognition. There will be some women in other parts of the world who wont even be eating that day because she used her last penny to feed her family or to make sure she has enough money to send her child to school.

This makes me sick to the stomach, especially for those young girls whose parents can actually afford to send them to school. That mother sacrificed all she had to make sure her child gets an education. But then…her daughter gets her first period and…the cycle  of poverty starts all over again. Let me explain why…

One of the things that impacted me the most from my time in Africa was an event we went to in Kenya that was geared towards helping young girls and women with providing reusable sanitary kits along with health and HIV education. Owning more than one pair of underwear is considered a luxury, and sanitary supplies are often too expensive for them to buy. So, they go without and you can imagine what that might look like when a girl or woman menstruates and she doesn’t have access to feminine products. Some girls shared with us that they sometimes may even use rocks, leaves or old rags. And we complain because “disposable pads are uncomfortable!?” But the saddest part of this is that a girl may drop out of school after she gets her first period because of the embarrassment, harassment and ridicule she may experience.  Because of this natural thing that every woman’s body goes through, she looses her education and her future because she does not have access to sanitary supplies. These young girls will sometimes resort to “selling” themselves so they can buy the sanitary supplies they need in order to stay in school and as a result may become pregnant or contract HIV. And so a vicious cycle begins again. But if we could supply her with sanitary supplies and keep her in school she may never have to find her self in the vicious cycle at all!

In Africa they say “If you want to change a nation, give a girl an education.”  My friend, James Waruiru, from Fountain of Hope and the one who put on the event we attended in Kenya, has one of the biggest hearts of anyone I know. Each month he helps over 300 girls by providing sanitary supplies and health/HIV teaching so they can stay in school and get the education they need. James currently has a fundraising challenge going on over at globalgiving.org. He is trying to raise $5000 to help ensure continued supply of sanitary products to girls and widows in his community. Myself, along with four other photographer friends have come together to see James’ challenge become a success and this is where you come in!

This mothers day, will you consider making a donation in honor of your mom or mother figure in your life? Will you celebrate her AND a young girl in Kenya by donating to James’ global giving challenge? If a girl can stay in school and get the education she wants she will ultimately be able to decide for herself when she gets married and starts a family instead of being forced into motherhood and poverty at too young of an age.

THE BEST PART ABOUT YOUR DONATION? YOU WILL BE ENTERED INTO A FREE DRAWING FOR EITHER A FABULOUS GIFT BASKET OR 1 OF 2 PHOTO SESSIONS! AND BOOM…YOU HELPED A GIRL STAY IN SCHOOL AND YOU ENTERED YOURSELF TO WIN A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOU OR YOUR MOTHER! SO, WILL YOU PARTNER WITH US TO SEE JAMES’ CHALLENGE IS MET!?!? WINDOW LIGHT + DIRECTIONAL LIGHT :: NATURAL LIGHT PHOTO TIP

You wanna make pretty pictures?:)

BECOME A LIGHT NOTICER!

Light is where it all happens, folks. I remember when I first jumped into photography, got my big fancy camera, and decided I was going to go for this…and hearing about light. The importance of it. That I should learn how it falls on my subject. Learn to use it and see it. I remember thinking yeah, sure. I can see the light. I mean, light is light, right? But as I began shooting and shooting, I started to notice something. Some photos just POPPED. And others were dull and lifeless. Even if the pose was good, the background was good, the expression was good…it was still dull. Flat. Then I realized I was not so smart after all;) Ha. We never are as smart as we think we are. :) I truly did need to LEARN to SEE light. Then and there, I began to respect the power of light.

A

LIGHT IS POWERFUL. LEARN TO RECOGNIZE LIGHT. LOVE IT, USE IT, UNDERSTAND IT. LIGHT ENABLES YOU TO CREATE BEAUTY.

A

At our ON THE SHOOT Workshop in February, our goal was simple….to equip the attendees with all they need for a successful shoot. We covered natural light, shooting in manual, gear for the job, styling a shoot, editing, and workflow. I talked all about light and it is a subject that is so fun for me. A few weeks ago I chatted HERE about open shade. Today, let’s talk about WINDOW LIGHT and DIRECTIONAL LIGHT…they go hand in hand. If you don’t use window light, START NOW. Window light is almost always phenomenal. It provides a very soft, indirect light all day long. It is one of the most effective pieces of lighting gear ever invented and is available to all of us!

Any window or door can work as a great indoor light source. As long as it does not have sunlight streaming directly into it and the light is nice and diffused, you are good to go. If there is sunlight streaming in, just check back later when it is gone or find a different window. If possible, I always place my brides next to a window for the makeup photos. Having pretty natural light makes SUCH a difference in the final image.

Side window light is created when the window is to the side of your subject…not the front. This is called directional light. I was a photographer several years before the power and beauty of directional light clicked in my brain. Now I use it all the time and LOVE it. Directional light is more dramatic than light coming from the front of your subject. Directional light creates shadows and highlights as it rolls over details. I love the richness this creates and always use directional light when I am photographing a wedding dress and flower bouquets.

This is the setup for the above photo. I used a reflector to bounce light onto the left side of the flower bouquet.

Directional light also works GREAT for portraits….as Gabi is demonstrating for us. :) Gabi is one of our senior models….more coming soon on these fun shoots!!

If you are taking photos of your child in your house…get them facing a window! You will have a much better photo than a dark corner with your camera’s pop up flash. So simple to do and the difference is stunning. Promise. :) This will forever be one of my favorite photos. It is Corde when he was six months old, sitting on our kitchen table, and facing the window.

Welp, that’s all for today. If window light and directional light is a new concept to you…I hope this gets you started using it!:)

    1. I am just a beginning photographer, actually do it more as a hobby so I enjoy picking up tips n looking at photographers photos.. And I’m really starting to learn more about light but these posts explaining how it works n why n which is best is soo helpful to me, keep it coming! But I have a question, I noticed you said to have the Window to the side of the person, yet on your babies pose he was ‘facing the light/window’, what’s t the difference? N is there a place for facing a window in a pose?

      [Reply]

    2. Hi Julia! Good question! Both side and direct window light have it’s place. It depends on the look you want and well and the set up of the room. Sometimes one just works better. If you want to make the eyes POP, then go for direct light. If you appreciate the beauty of highlights and shadows..then go for side light…such as when photographing the details of a flower bouquet. Hope that helps! :)

Bit and Pieces…

OF MY WEEKEND…

INSTAGRAM style.

Life in the in-between moments. The day to day everyday.

Here’s to a April 1st and a beautiful week full of good things…:)

IT’S A PARTY! :: SENIOR MODEL MEET AND GREET

In 2013, one of our goals at CHAR Photography is simply to get to know others. We want to meet you…in a TANGIBLE way. Not just through the computer screen. :) We want to shake your hand, see your pretty face, hear from you, reach out to you, serve you, give you beauty and inspiration….in a small way, add a touch of LIFE to your life.

Our mission statement is simple: Guided by our passion to create beauty; we will enable others by esteeming, affirming, and validating. With attention to detail, commitment, honesty, integrity, and warmth; we will serve others and honor our God.

Yep, we are a photography studio. But our mission statement is the WHY behind what we do. We believe that the language of affirmation and validation is a POWERFUL language. It’s the ART of giving a person permission to be WHO they are. This is the heartbeat of our senior model program. Our senior models are highlight of our year here at CHAR photography. We put a lot of time, thought, planning, and preparation into this program.  Our goal is to make this a top notch experience for each of our models from start to finish.

See all this prettiness? ALL GRACE. She has a way of creating and building and styling that continually amazes me. The cloths, shoes, and props were a representation of her vision for the Team Senior Model Shoot.

Her husband, Jeremy, built that awesome clothes rack.

Here is a vision board she created. Complete with pretty striped tape.

Grace and Karen dreamed up these window displayed. Loved the fun party vibe these created!

Fancy cake pops from Lititz Family Cupboard Bakery, sweet and salty popcorn, and little wraps were the munchables.

Justine! Our 2013 intern. You will love her. I already do. :)

Games and fun!

LAST NIGHT…..was such a fun night. Nights like this make me feel so incredibly blessed to have the team (Andrea, Anna, Grace, Kathleen, Karen, and Justine) by my side. These ladies! To each of our senior models…you guys ROCK. :) This is ONLY the beginning…we have a lot of goodness planned for our fine model team this year.

HAPPY EASTER! I am off to paint Easter eggs with the boys. Looking forward to the weekend. XO

A LITTLE BIT OF THE HAPPENINGS ROUND HERE…

Can somebody tell me how is it is almost April already??  ALREADY? I am ready for warm sunshine and all…but wow, the speed of time honestly scares me a little. After we wrapped up our WORKSHOP, we have *kinda* been able to slow down a little…which translates into prepping for spring! Anna is working on defining and tweaking our editing workflow, GRACE is heading up all the prep for our SENIOR MODEL PROGRAM (excited:), Andrea is working an a marketing project and helping with our senior models, and Kathleen is helping us ALL organize the details. I have been meeting with my spring 2013 brides (so excited for the weddings I have coming up), connecting with several photographers  (love meeting new souls), and am slowly being able to cross things off my winter to-do list. It feels so good to get things in place for our upcoming year.

We needed another workspace for Anna and more monitors….and a brand spank’n shiny new laptop…new ‘toys’, ahem, work gear.:) See the desk? Found it here in the factory building. It had been used as a drawing table…the top of it had thick paper taped to it and the legs had huge 2×4′s nailed to it. We peeled off the tape and removed the paper,  the sticky tape residue came off with Goo Be Gone, removed the 2×4′s, and added the wheels to the legs for a more industrial feel. It fits perfect in this corner. Grace found this chair and I love that it combines comfy with snazzy…:)

Our packaging area needed and little TLC…DONE.

Window displays under construction! Grace and Karen (Grace’s intern…you will see more of her:), put their heads together and are coming up with something that I know will be fabulous.

My little buddy, Corde, has been keeping me company. As I was shooting these studio details, he totally grabbed this camera and started doing this…I had nothing to do with this little setup. :) Btw, this antique camera is from Ukraine…gift from Anna.

Senior Models! We are in the middle of meeting and planning lots of good things for our senior model team. We just finished mini shoots of each of our models right here in the studio. Grace did hair and makeup for this shoot and we used our chalkboard….more to come on that soon.

And the senior model Meet and Greet is coming up next week! Studio decor, slideshow, fun treats, a little game, coffee and izzes…in the works. Janae was designing something fun with the images from the mini shoots…

We got three huge canvas gallery wraps for the wall…I love them. And a little bit of creativity never hurts…even for such things, right? :)

New chair. And cool shoes. All in the day’s work.:)

It is Friday….:) Happy spring and happy weekend!!

AMY :: PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOTS

Oh she is so fabulous!

So I met Amy about five years ago when I assisted another photographer, Rick, from Titus Touch Photography on a wedding. I remember that wedding, I was so freaking scared! I was so scared that I was going mess up and I was so nervous…I mean, it was a REAL wedding. Well, Amy was at this wedding also assisting Rick and I loved her. She helped me not feel so nervous. She is one of the most upbeat and kind people I have ever met. We kept in touch throughout the years and today she is a jumping in with both feet into her biz…and I think she ROCKS. When she asked me for head-shots for her new website, I was all in. Because I like to share a little with you who others are, I put her on the spot and did a mini ‘interview’. :) Be sure to check out her website and work HERE.

So Amy, tell me a little about you and who you are…

A

I am married to my closest friend…Josh is amazingly supportive of all I am. We have two kids (7 and 5) who are completely opposite in every. single. way! They keep us busy, inspire us and challenge us. We have a needy (understatement!) golden retriever who demands our attention at all times! As a family, we desire to serve God in everything we do and, of course, fall short often.;)

A

I like you.:)

What do you love about photography?

A
I love capturing life…taking a moment and pausing it, making it last a bit longer than time allows. I love that by taking a person’s photograph, I am becoming a small part of who they are. The camera is like my sketchbook, my way to capture and create and tell stories that are well worth telling. I love that no matter how much I learn about photography, there is still more out there to push and challenge me, to force me to see moments I might otherwise have missed.

A

A sketchbook…I like that! And yes, always and always more to push and challenge us.

How did you get started?

A
My photography started as a simple part time job… a friend of mine who is a professional photographer was looking for an assistant, someone to help with paperwork, create albums, and handle some of the business aspects of the job. I had just had my daughter and resigned from full time teaching so I jumped in. What started as a simple part time job, soon grew into a love of photography. I wanted to learn how to capture the images I was working with each week. I bought my own “good” camera and started my journey… first with my own family, then with friends. Finally, I took the leap (always a risk!) and began my own “little” business.

A

Ah yeah…. a big leap and a little risk….that is life, I think.

Tell me a little about your biz today…

A
I have been professionally photographing others on my own for about a year. Most of the time I shoot outdoors in natural light. Families and children are a favorite of mine…simple and real. The people in your life last forever. They are priority and I love to capture this special bond. I am committed to getting to know my clients and best capture who they are and love when clients become friends.

A

Simple and real. Your awesome, Amy. Here is to you and ALL you are and where you are headed. The stars are the limit….:) And BTW, your gorgeous.
